In the words of
Dave's wife Sue.
"Dave Barber a Woodlands
instructor and colleague of Dave’s has been
accepted to run the London Marathon. He wishes to do it in memory of
Dave, to set up a trust fund in his name to enable young people who may
not otherwise be able to afford to, to go to an Outdoor centre and
experience the benefits it can bring to a young persons life. Dave used
to frequently come home and tell me about the experiences he had had
that day, they often numbered stories about children who had faced their
fears, however great or small and over come them. Faces one’s fear gives
one the experience to build confidence and personality. Outdoor
education provided by the right people can do just that.
From the letters and comments I received after Dave sadly lost his
life
I know how much he personally gave to many young people, many of whom
told me they remember coming to Woodlands and working with Dave and cite
that experience as being life changing. Dave would be humbled to know
that his name is being used to enable disadvantaged young people to
develop their lives in a positive way."

A personal note from
Aled Davies, Director of Ieuenctid Cambria Youth, its activities leader
and a friend of Dave Thorne.
"Dave inspired many,
but barely went out of his way to recognise this, sadly its only after his
passing, that I and many others have truly realised the debt that we owe
to Dave. In his own modest manner, he might have been pleased to read
this, but would want to know what the fuss was about!
I was fortunate enough to
meet and work with Dave for a spell, during which he shared his knowledge,
advice and enthusiasm for outdoor activities freely and continued to do so
after I left the Brecon area and moved to West Wales. Through occasionally
meeting up for a drink or lengthy phone calls, I was able to continue
learning from and being inspired by Dave, his help in writing our AALA
application was invaluable, but more than this, the enthusiasm, joy of
working in, understanding and enjoying the outdoors helped inspire me to
pass on the little I knew to others around me.
I have had the pleasure of
working with and learning from many people who have worked in the great
outdoors, but I am indebted to Dave more than any others, without his
support, encouragement and willingness to answer my requests for advice, I
would never have had the confidence or knowledge to do what I'm doing
now.
It was a pleasure to spend
time with Dave's family, wife Sue and children, Andrew & Elin, the
whole family shared the enjoyment and positive experiences of taking part
in and leading outdoor activities, there was always a welcome at the
family home in Talybont-on-Usk and many stories shared.
I am delighted that both I,
and the rest of our company are so keen to support this bursary, and wish
Dave Barber all the best for his forthcoming Marathon run in aid of this
fantastic cause. Everyone else who is involved with this has our support
as well. I don't need to repeat the words above, they say everything.
Please support this in any way you can, those that benefit will fully
appreciate your actions."
